Loving Others as Yourself

Loving Others as Yourself

Showing the love of Christ to others is important as we go about sharing the good news and gospel of Jesus Christ. When we love others as ourselves, we are showing them what being a Christian is about. You can speak all day long, but if your actions are not loving, kind, and compassionate then no one will listen to you for too long. Your words and actions must be consistent.

Loving others as yourself requires you to think of each person you meet as just as important in your life as you are – caring for them as much as you care about your own well being; physically, emotionally, and spiritually. This type of love not only shares everything it has but looks for ways to uplift and encourage.

Think about how different our schools, churches, and neighborhoods would be if we all practiced loving each other as we love ourselves. Love like this looks at every person as essential to their life in Christ. We should look for ways to not only improve our own situation, but that of others around us.

Missionary work is an example of loving others as yourself. Missionaries go out and live in sometimes very uncomfortable conditions to show others the love of Christ. They give unselfishly toward building the faith of people all around the world.

What practical ways can you love your neighbor as yourself during your daily routine? Just as you pray for yourself, you can also pray for them. Prayer changes things and when you pray for someone, even if they are not aware of it, you are showing the love of God. If you see an area of their life that needs prayer, ask the Father to move on their behalf.

Showing compassion for others is also important. The compassion you show to others is your testimony. Your actions are showing others what you believe and that you love others and are willing to help. All too often, the first instance of Jesus some people will ever see is Jesus in you.  What will they see?

Loving yourself, your neighbor, and God also brings balance into your life. We can get so caught up in thinking about our needs that we forget about others. It is when we take our focus off of ourselves and give God all the praise and honor and start looking for ways to help others that change starts to happen in our life. You will find a peace in your heart because you are actively loving yourself, others, and God.

What Happens when we Lack Self-Control?

Have you ever seen a driver of a car lose control? In a split second, they went from hands steady on the wheel, foot on gas ready to break, eyes focused on the road oblivious to the distractions around him, to a frightening view of death due to an accident. That’s how fast we can lose control when we start compromising, giving in to desires, and not staying grounded in Christ.

In order to live a fulfilling life, you must find balance between everything you do. Practicing self-control helps you achieve this balance and maintain stability in your life daily. As we all know, anything done in excess is not good. There are several dangers that present themselves when we lack self-control in our lives.

Dangers of not Having Self-Control

1. Relationship Dangers. The lack of self-control is risky to our relationships. When we live to satisfy our own desires, our relationships suffer. The reason this happens is because we are being selfish – plain and simple. We focus on ourselves and what we want when we fail to rein in our lack of self-control.

In turn, this can cause us to neglect the needs of our friends and families in the process. Just like anything else that’s been ignored, eventually those we’re neglecting will walk away. Because you have put your own wants so far ahead of the relationship needs, you have put them in a place where they no longer feel needed, important to you, or loved. This selfishness can and will eventually destroy the relationship.

2. Health Dangers. There are a ton of instances where not exhibiting self-control can affect our health, but almost all of them boil down to us not seeing the reward as being valuable enough or happening quick enough to resist the temptation.

Let’s take exercise as an example. Almost everyone knows they should exercise because of the wonderful health benefits we receive when we do. However, many of us opt to not keep fit and give excuse after excuse for not doing so. The reward of doing such is phenomenal – increased health, better body tone, etc. But the cost or time required to see results is too great for many of us. We would rather be comfortable than prepare our bodies for a long prosperous life. The lack of self control when our health is concerned can cause our bodies to become run down and out of shape.

3. Spiritual Dangers. Another danger, perhaps the most dangerous one of all, caused by a lack of self-control rests in the deceiving lies the enemy tells us and we believe. Satan works extremely hard to keep us focused on ourselves and our own desires instead of being focused on how we could be a blessing to those around us. These lies pull us further and further away from God and our purpose in life.

When we give in to these fleshly wants, we are allowing Satan to win. We are basically admitting that we have allowed him to take control of us. When we don’t have self control, Satan uses that against us.

The lack of self-control can be dangerous not only to our bodies, but our minds, our self-esteem, and relationships … just to name a few. Because a solid grasp on self-control is necessary to fight the demise of all of these things and in turn who we are as children of God, it’s extremely important that we decide what is truly important in our lives and pursue those things, acting with self-discipline every step of the way.

I Go To The Rock

by I Go to the Rock

I Go To The Rock

Where can I turn when there’s no one else I can turn to?
Who am I gonna talk to when nobody wants to listen?
Who am I gonna lean on when there’s no foundation stable?
I go to the Rock I know that’s able
I go to the Rock

I go to the Rock of my salvation
I go to the Stone that the builders rejected
Run to the Mountain and the Mountain stands by me
The earth all around me is sinking sand
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand
When I need a shelter
When I need a friend
I go to the Rock

Where can I hide ’til the storms have all passed over?
Where am I gonna run to when those winds of sorrow threaten?
Is there a refuge in those times of great tribulation?
When my soul needs consolation
I go to the Rock

I go to the Rock of my salvation
I go to the Stone that the builders rejected
Run to the Mountain and the Mountain stands by me
The earth all around me is sinking sand
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand
When I need a shelter
When I need a friend
I go to the Rock

How all Nine Fruits of the Spirit Work Together

All of the Fruits of the Spirit that are mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23 are given to the believer in order to benefit others by drawing people to God through them. The fruits are divinely infused into the Christian by way of the Holy Spirit. the Fruits of the Spirit acutally become part of the person’s personality. This happening is made possible only through the infilling of the Holy Spirit.

Together, the fruits are very powerful in producing results.  God intended for the nine Fruits of the Spirit to work as one, as a team, within the believer in their life; transforming, sanctifying, and touching people for God.

The Fruits of the Spirit work together to draw and invite others to God’s love and acceptance. For example, love, the first fruit listed, could be called the gateway fruit – when it’s lived out by the Christian, other fruits are naturally enacted. Joy and peace can follow – because the Christian is walking in love towards others. Unbelievers will be touched, saved, and open to witnessing – if the believer is reaching out to them in love.

Goodness, longsuffering, kindness, and gentleness are a tight team as well, as each Fruit of the Spirit feeds right into the next. It is difficult to be kind without goodness, or gentle without being kind. God designed these fruits to fulfill and go along  each other. As they are walked in daily out of habit, they become even more effective!

As believers become increasingly aware of the power of allowing the Holy Spirit to flow through them, instilling these Godly qualities, their victories in life increase.  Unbelievers are drawn to God through His people, as they see a real living manifestation of fruit produced in their lives.

It’s important to remember that learning to walk in, and utilize, these Fruits of the Spirit characteristics is a two part process. God does His part by instilling the qualities in the believer and then believers must do their part – choose to walk in and use those qualities instead of the natural inclinations of the flesh. Beginning the new habit of walking with love, gentleness, or self-control is sometimes a fight against the old, self-satisfying way that unfortunately more and more people today are prone to.

In today’s world it seems far too many people are raised to believe what they want is the most important thing, or paramount. With the help of the Holy Spirit and transforming of the believer’s mind, it’s possible for Christians to show others how much greener the grass really is when they follow God’s ways instead of the fleshly ones that so many around them are directed by.

The Bible reminds us of this in Romans 12:2 (KJV) – “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God”.

The First Three Fruits of the Spirit – Love, Joy, and Peace

The first three Fruits of the Spirit are found in Galatians 5:22-23. They are love, joy, and peace. Let’s take a look at each of these divine spiritual fruits from God, remembering that He imparts these upon us through the workings of the Holy Spirit.

The Love Fruit

The first fruit of the spirit is love, and appropriately so, because God is love.  Scriptures tell us that without love, nothing else matters.  “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity (love), it profiteth me nothing.”  – I Cor. 13:3 KJV

Humans simply are not capable of truly loving ourselves or others without help from the Holy Spirit.  As the Spirit flows and lives in us and becomes part of our personalities, we are then able to love others with all of the intensity and unselfishness God means for us.  This love will be so apparent to others around us in our lives, and it will be very obvious in God’s work we do in our lives.

Joy Fruit

The second fruit of the spirit is joy, which is defined as “great delight or gladness of heart”.  We live in a harsh world with so much sorrow, hurt, destruction, and weariness around us. Only God brings true joy!  Without God, there is no true joy, and surely no lasting joy. The temporary pleasures, happiness, and satisfaction that the world gives us are limited and shallow at best.

True joy, given from God, is not only available to us, but it is also a lasting and deeply satisfying joy that we can remain in while walking with the Holy Spirit. As He infuses our being and fills us with this wonderful joy, we are then able to give it to those around us.  “Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.” -  Isaiah 51:11 KJV

The Fruit of Peace

The third fruit of the spirit is peace, defined as “the tranquility of soul, sense of well-being, or rest, harmony”.  A believer without peace in their heart has a heart filled with discord, torment, adversity, and other unnecessary trials.  Peace is atainable and it’s real. Having peace in our hearts gives us the ability to live at peace with those around us, but only with the Spirit’s help.  “The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” – Exodus 14:14 KJV

These are only the first three fruits of the spirit. With six more fruits of the spirit, just imagine how wonderful life in Christ is when we have, and use, all nine fruits of the spirit!

Faithfulness, Meekness, and Temperance – The Final Three Fruits of the Spirit

The nine Fruit of the Spirit spoken of in Galatians 5:22-23 are love, joy, peace, longsuffering (patience), gentleness (kindness), goodness, faithfulness, meekness, and temperance (self-control).

Faithfulness

The seventh Fruit of the Spirit, faithfulness, is a characteristic of God that’s infused in believers through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in us.  As believers daily make room for the Spirit to fill their hearts with these divine Godly qualities, faithfulness grows inside that believer.

Faithfulness is defiend as “fidelity which makes one true to his task or promise” and “steadfast, dedicated, dependable”.  This God-given faithfulness causes the believer to be able to be faithful and loyal to others, in a way not seen or even understood by the world.  Faithfulness instilled by the Holy Spirit into the believer is necessary and needed to stay loyal to God, each other, family, and friends. The results of this Fruit of the Spirit are less heartache and broken trust.

Meekness – Otherwise known as being Humble

The eighth Fruit of the Spirit is meekness, a necessary fruit that shines through in believers to others.  Meekness is an effective fruit, or trait, because a believer will  be spiritually sensitive to another’s plight. When a believer is meek, they have put aside their human pride and are able to serve others out of humility. Others will be greatly ministered to through this Fruit of the Spirit – they feel heard, valued, and cared about.

People will respond favorably to the believer who totally allows the Holy Spirit to fill them with meekness, which is exactly why God gives believers this fruit. By being living examples of the Holy Spirit, Christians become fruit producers for God!  Meekness can also be defined as “mildness combined with tenderness”, “controlled strength”, and “equitable, reasonable, forbearing”.

Temperance – Possibly the Hardest for Humans to Let Go Of

Self control, or temperance, is the nineth Fruit of the Spirit, and definitely a vitally important quality in a Christian.  The Scriptures tell us that our flesh and spirit are warring against each other in this life. Temperance is the God given trait that enables believers to daily battle the flesh and gain self control over our sinful natures so that we can stay focused on the things of God.

Using in this fruit gives the believer a lasting victory over oppressive struggles such as addictions, hot temper or anger issues, judgment and critical attitudes, and unforgiveness.

Allowing the Holy Spirit to lead and infiltrate in this area in our lives will produce strong and visible fruits for all to see, and give glory to God!
